Last Wednesday my laptop's new hard drive failed unexpectedly for no apparent reason. Replaced since then by this week, I wonder how long any new hard drive will last. This Acer laptop has been nothing but trouble in the last half of 2013, unexpectedly for a machine I bought in January 2012. The second failure was not as costly as the first in terms of lost work that cannot be retrieved from failed storage. The first time a drive failed I lost everything from July-December 2012 and January-June 2013 (having failed to back up anything from those months) and only got some items back from online sources where they had been submitted by me. This time I lost only one revised short story and 48 pages of a novel rewrite that was in progress, along with an updated map for that book - all frustrating losses but not as numerous. Today I learned one of my "lost" stories was found by the publisher/editor to whom it was sent in June and this tale of a comic book amphibious superheroine will be included in the anthology where it was submitted (more details can be found at my other Weebly page - The Many Worlds of John X. Grey). This makes three of my stories that will appear in Beneath the Waves when it is eventually released during 2014.
I guess with all my technological troubles of 2013 and my ongoing struggles to survive debt and bills that I seem swamped by constantly, the news that "Currents in a Superheroine's Career" has been located and will be published was certainly unexpected and wonderful. Now if I can just have a computer that works reliably without failing to continue some revisions this year while waiting for some determination about my possible mental disability in coming weeks.
P. S. - To the kind gentleman who offered me assistance from Toledo, I should relate here that I never received any sort of package delivered to my home, but did get some e-mails from DHL (thought that company went out of business a few years back, but I guess not) indicating they tried delivering that parcel but unsuccessfully (one date - July 1st - that was claimed as an attempt they never stopped at my door or knocked - I know being home that day and not at my job). I just wanted to say thanks for the effort, albeit unsuccessful in its final execution at this end.
